Too Good Not To Share...

Alaska Science Forum: A "totally weird" dinosaur;
new waste study in Denali

This article starts out with one topic and draws you into what you think is all about a scientific discovery but low and behold it really is an article about poop. I am not sure how one topic really should be part of the next.

Alaska Science Forum: A "totally weird" dinosaur; new waste study in Denali:

"In other Denali National Park news, researchers have tracked the movement of human waste down a well-traveled glacier on Mount McKinley, estimated that the byproduct of climbers on the West Buttress route will emerge from melting ice as soon as 15 years from now.

Michael Loso is coauthor of a new paper in the journal Arctic, Antarctic and Alpine Research. In it, the Alaska Pacific University professor reports on a park-sponsored study to determine the fate of human waste deposited on Kahiltna Glacier, the frozen pathway that leads more than 1,000 climbers each year up Mount McKinley. UAA graduate student Katelyn Goodwin and UAF’s Matthias Braun also coauthored the paper.

The National Park Service requires climbers to remove their feces from base camp and from a climbing camp at 17,000 feet using a portable Clean Mountain Can, but climbers can dispose of the waste later by tossing biodegradable bags in crevasses. The new study opened the eyes of managers.

“Back in the 1980s we thought it would take thousands of years to come out (after being thrown in a crevasse),” said Roger Robinson, a mountaineering ranger at Denali who invented the Clean Mountain Can waste-removal system. “We also thought waste on the surface would break down pretty fast. That’s also been disproven.”

...

I wonder how many other things in our society and world today will be disproven tomorrow?

Termination Dust

This morning we woke to what we call termination dust.  There has been fresh snow on the mountains of the Alaska Range for a few weeks now but this is the first bit of snow that has shown up so close to home.

This is that light dusting of snow that sticks around more than an hour and just might stay for a while.  The roofs and grass are dusted white signifying the end of another glorious Alaska summer.

All day yesterday we were at the property working like good beavers getting ready for winter and trying to finish the roof on the youngest cabin before it snowed.

Here is what it looked like last night at 5:30 p.m.

The plan is to get up there again today at about 11:00 a.m. and keep on with the forward motion!

Wish us luck and a helping hand from our good Lord!

Fall Just About Over

Clear blue skies greeted us on Monday morning ~ September 24th ~ after a blustery night all the birch trees were stripped free of their leaves.  Fall is just about over for us and now we wait ~ wait for s*n*o*w!  Which in some circles around town is a dirty word.

Yesterday

Yesterday the bus ride to work included an unplanned stop in the middle of a very busy intersection when the bus and a Ford pickup truck wanted to be in the same place at the same time. Yesterday it was all I could do to post the photos and I am sure you are wondering what in the heck happened.

It goes something like this...

There were seven passengers on the morning bus. Two of the passengers I do not see frequently but the other folks ride the bus often and three of which work at the university also which makes the ride to work normally filled with light conversation about one thing or another. I normally like to sit in the first set of lower seats on the right (passenger) side of the bus as this allots a good view out the front windows and keeps any motion sickness away that might, on rare occasions, make itself known. Yesterday, luckily for all of us, Marcus had this spot so I sat on the left side and one seat away from Jake.

At the aforementioned intersection just as the bus started its turn to the left on the green light Marcus stands up, grabs the support rails above me and next to where he was sitting and yells “WHOA! WHOA! WHOA!” I look up to see the head lights of a truck heading right for us.

The bus swerved to the left. The truck swerved to the right and I brace myself. My left hand on Jake's shoulder and my right hand on Marcus's back-pack as he is now standing in the middle of the isle. I put my head down so that the brim of my hat covers my face and close my eyes.

Ker Slam
Bang
Grind

And with a jolt we all come to a grinding stop. A few brief seconds of personal inventory of my senses tells me I'm okay and we all start turning to each other. You okay? I'm okay! Are they okay?

Everyone on the bus is okay and the bus driver opens the back door because the front door is now blocked by the Ford truck. Then he goes out to check the folks in the truck where we see the young man, no more than 18 years old, and the young girl beside him nod their heads acknowledging that they too are okay.

One of the folks on the bus called 911 for emergency crews to come to our aid while we are all sitting calmly still, a bit stunned but no one is hurt or hysterical. We are just sitting there listening. Waiting. I am sure we were all doing what I was doing, thinking about the last minute or so and playing it back in our minds to be sure our brains have recorded the events correctly.

Then... we hear... the squeal of vehicle tires.

Screech! Bang!

What? What in the world was that?

700 yards down the road another vehicle accident. We are sure it was someone pulling out of the coffee shop stand gawking at the accident we just had and were in one themselves.

When the emergency vehicles showed up with their flashing light it was as if the lights snapped me out of my daze and I remembered that I had brought my camera to work with me to take photos at our staff luncheon. I looked down at my lap, where I had placed my camera bag when I got on the bus, it was still sitting there safe and sound. I turned to Jake and said “I have my camera I should take a few photos, its not everyday you're in a bus accident”.

As I got my camera out of the bag and ready to take some photos I exchanged nervous laughter with the lady who was sitting to my right then got up to take the photos that I posted yesterday.

Once the emergency crews and the State Troopers assessed that everyone truly was fine, took our statements and a second bus had arrived to take us passengers on to our destinations, they escorted us across the street to the other bus and away we went away. Away from the flashing lights and away from the carnage in the middle, and I mean dab smack in the middle, of the intersection and back on the road to work none the worse for the wear.

So How Was Your Morning?

Mine was fine and you should know I am still very, very glad I ride public transportation to work!

In Return

I'd like to tell you I wasn't looking for anything in return.  I'd like to tell you that just knowing the good deed I had done for you was enough.  There are, as we all know a lot of things we would all like... one of these things is something in return.

Happier

I keep going back there to look.  To look and see what I might be missing.  Low and behold I am not missing a thing. Nor am I missed.  Life will move forward without Facebook and I just might be happier.

Campfire Mac & Cheese

Preparation is the longest part of campfire mac & cheese.
Fry bacon or sausage set aside to drain off the fat.
While the noodles are on the stove to boil cut up some onion and garlic then add frozen corn, peas and what ever else you want in your mac & cheese. For spices we use parsley, oregano and chili powder.

Mix the cooked noodles in with the other ingredients.

Add this to small disposable cooking pans that have
 been lined with foil.

Bring the milk and cheese to a simmer and creamy goodness stage.

Pour cheese sauce over the noodle mix and give each pan a stir.

Cover each pan with a layer of foil. Rolling the edges for a nice seal.

Now they are ready for transport to the property and will be cooked later that evening for supper after a good days work.

Build a fire.  We prefer to build large fires especially since there is plenty of old wood and brush at the property that needs to be cleared and burned. I built this nice six foot diameter fire pit!

Spread out the coals so that one side of the fire is just level coals.  Put the mac & cheese directly on the leveled coal and leave there for 15 to 20 minutes or until the cheese sauce boils out the corners of the pan.

Each of us had out own mac & cheese dish to eat from ~ less mess than having to serve up plates full and this way each person got their fair share!  When everyone has been working hard and is super hungry this is a must.

Sit back ~ relax ~ and enjoy your very own pan of hot ~ and I mean hot ~ mac & cheese campfire style!
