Kaua'i Holiday ~ Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail

Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail from Shipwreck Beach to Punahoa Point and back, is an absolutely compulsory hike while visiting the south side of Kaua'i. Even on a windy day the views are spectacular, and in the waves below we spotted a giant sea turtle swimming among the rocks.

It is a moderate hike with some uphill and some sandy trail that could be slippery, take your time and watch your footing especially at the cliffs edge. 

Plan for a full afternoon hike to enjoy all this trail has to offer, take snacks and plenty of drinking water.

Kauai Beer Co. located on one of Lihue's main streets is a lively place that serves up good food and tasty beer.  An excellent place to enjoy an early supper after a day at the beach.

Kaua'i Holiday ~ Waimea Canyon

14 miles long, 1 mile wide and more than 3,600 feet deep

It was a great day for a drive, parking was a bit slim but other tourists were also coming and going so we did not miss out on any of the sights. There is a parking pass fee of $5.00 (or was it $10.00) but this parking pass is good all day and at all three of the main parking areas in the Waimea State Park.  

We did have to turn away a local when he came by looking for a ride. Maybe he was just looking for lunch, either way we declined this particular invitation to help.  Heehee!

Kaua'i Holiday ~ Trees & Texture & Waterspouts

Towering trees give us a sense of grandeur and wonder, seldom can I pass by a view such as this tall tree standing proudly in the field without stopping to enjoy the view and of course take a photograph or two.

The island of Kaua’i is filled with amazing sights, red dirt, rooted textures of seaside trees, a photographer’s dream.

We spent some time watching the surf at Spouting Horn Park, worth a stop to see, and hear.

Kaua'i Holiday ~ Sandwich Islands

We stumbled across these gems along side the road that tell a story of when European sailing ships first began charting the Pacific Ocean.

Captain James Cook visited the islands on January 18,1778, and named them the Sandwich Islands in honor of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was one of his sponsors as the First Lord of the Admiralty. This name was in use until the 1840s, when the local name Hawaii gradually began to take precedence. (source-Wikipedia)

My birthday gift this year from my family is an old map of Alaska, and in the bottom left corner is an archipelago called the Sandwich Islands. How cool is that?!

Kaua'i Holiday ~ Wailua Falls

The Wailua Falls just north of Lihue are the falls that were featured in the television show Fantasy Island that first aired in 1978.

In the weeks before we visited it had been rainy, and the Wailua River was running exceptionally high so the falls were overflowing.

The parking is slim here so we joined the line of other vehicles that had parked on the side of the road. The trails down to the falls appeared to all be fenced off although there were a few groups of folks attempting to traverse to the pool at the bottom of the falls. We chose to enjoy the view from up top.

An afternoon walk along Lumaha'i Beach.

At the end of the day we enjoyed a fun and tasty meal at Tahiti Nui along with some yummy local beer.  A relaxing atmosphere and friendly services.

Kaua'i Holiday Day One ~ Drive to the North Shore

Kilauea Lighthouse built in 1913 stands 180 feet up on the cliff-side of Kilauea Point. Bring your valid National Park Pass for the entry fee, without this pass the entrance fee is $10.00 per adult. A must visit for any bird watching enthusiast.

The endangered Nene or Hawaiian Goose.

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge where you can catch a glimpse of a soaring Red-footed Booby, Great Frigatebird, Laysan Albatross or a Red-tailed or White-tailed Tropicbirds.

Kaua'i Holiday Day One ~ Best Breakfast Place Found

Welcome to Kaua'i!

The first part of our Hawai’i holiday on Kaua'i we stayed on the East side of the island in Kapa'a where we quickly found our go-to breakfast place, Kountry Kitchen. The Luau Omelette for Josh and the Avocado Toast for me.

Kountry Kitchen is a popular gathering place for locals, and those tourists who are lucky enough to ask the right local where to get a good breakfast in Kapa’a. There seems to always be about a 20 to 30 minute wait for a table so plan your morning accordingly, it is well worth the wait.

Abandoned section of railroad tracks in Kapa'a, and from the information I can find it appears to be from the Ahukini Terminal & Railroad Company (AT&RC), its purpose was to serve private clients along the island’s eastern shore, such as the Lihue Plantation and Makee Sugar Company.

Semester Two Project One

Semester two project one, a Rack painting. Aerial view, one light source, items that are tied together in meaning (belonging to one person or topic), and the shadows are to give the viewer the perspective.

'Shadow of a Kingpin' - the composition is made up of items my Dad created plus a little bit of his heart.

Bravery in action - showing up to class - painting in front of others - making mistakes - planning a recovery- partaking in a class critique - sharing with you here.  It is by no means perfect but it was a labor of love (and for a grade - which in itself is a good motivator).
