In order to span the distance between the ridges and the river they built this tall wooden bridge over the Gilahina River. When we were there the river seemed more like a creek but it was July and most of the winter snow melt is already at the ocean.
Wooden train bridges were known to catch fire as the train used it brakes the sparks from the brakes would often catch the bridge on fire. They were always having to repair this bridge.
If you look closely at the photos you can see white spots everywhere. Those are the cotton wood trees seeds drifting in the breeze. At one point it looked like it was snowing. There were also mosquitoes... thick as anything so our visit here was short and at a brisk walking pace.
