The Drive To McCarthy

To get to the beginning of the McCarthy road you must first drive the Edgerton  Highway to Chitina.  It is 33 miles to Chitina and 59 miles from there to the walking bridge that leads to McCarthy.  There are few roads in Alaska that have a long straight stretch, this is one of them and is most unusual.

On the way to Chitina a must stop place ~ Liberty Falls.

While you are there be sure to bush up on your bear safety facts.  Yes there are bears in these woods and they will most likely see you as a threat. Always be mindful of bears they are not cute and cuddly they are omnivores and will eat you for lunch.  NO joke!

The Copper River ~ photo from the bridge just outside of Chitina village.  This is a popular salmon dipnetting spot and where our son was fishing the first part of July.  Dipnetting is an Alaska resident subsistence style of fishing.

All along the road to McCarthy there is public and private land mixed together.  There are some folks who live out here year round, now that is determination or crazy fool-hardness if you ask me.

It is a beautiful drive with wilderness as far as the eye can see and then some.  The road is gravel the entire way and the rocks are sharp so driving slowly is highly recommended.  And why not drive slow the views along the way are best taken in as you meander down the road.
