Four Day Weekend ~ Day Four

Our third day at the property was a jammed packed day putting up the remaining eight panels, plus gable ends and ridge cap. We got an early start trying to beat the heat which worked out quite well. It took some time to get the job site set up to work on the other side of the roof but once there the panels went up smoothly.

It is a long way up there... or down there 

depending on your vantage point.

Almost done... get back to work! Union break is so over!

Only thing left is the ridge cap!

HOORAY!  You guys rock and roll!

Time for a well deserved supper, the camp cook has outdone herself tonight!

What's next?  Everything else!

Yup that is right ~ leaves have appeared in just this short time.

Summer is here!

Four Day Weekend ~ Day Three

Our second day at the property and it is a scorcher!  After spending so many day below zero this heat takes some getting use to and drinking plenty of water is a must.  The boys are on the roof waiting for Kenny (Dad) to finish building the ladder that will be used for support now that most of the panels are on the one side.  Waiting on the HOT roof is a very tough job.

Tonight's supper is moose cooked in the kettle on the fire with the leftover potatoes from yesterday.

One side done!  Again GO TEAM US!

We found a Timex watch in the woods at the front of the cabin.  It has a date that would indicate it was lost on the property two and a half years ago.  It does not belong to any of us so it must have belonged to one of the fire fighters. It took a-lickin and is still tick'in!  My new camp cook watch!

Another fine day and another fabulous supper, if I do say so myself.  I suppose the camp cook should not toot her own horn but it was a long hard day working and great food at the end of the day is a must.

Tomorrow will be day three at the property and we are hoping to have the roof finished gable end to gable end and ridge cap securely in place.

Four Day Weekend ~ Day Two

We spent day two, three and four of the four day weekend working at the property.  Now that it has stopped snowing it is time to get back to work.  It took the better part of the first day to get our bearings and with the temperatures all of the sudden being in the 70's we were just a bit warm.  

First we ~ and by we I mean the young men that are not afraid of heights ~ took off the first layer of tar paper and replaced it with Bituthene waterproof membrane.  The cabin wintered over with the tar paper for protection.

I got to work on the back side of the cabin near the driveway to attach pressure treated plywood and ramp up the dirt so that the rain and snow melt will not run under the cabin, but instead be drained away to each side.

The oldest son waiting for the first panel of tin to be cut, pre-drilled and handed up.  Hot dude on a black tar roof.

Go TEAM US!  First panel of 16 installed! The brothers work well together and both did an OUTSTANDING job!

Now that we know it fits properly, Kenny gets to work getting the other panels trimmed and pre-drilled.

I also get to be the camp cook.  Tonight's supper roasted potatoes and grilled chicken!

Hooray for a day well spent!  Hard work and a great supper at the end of the day!  First of many great days to come up to the property working on building a home.

Four Day Weekend ~ Day One

Down by the river at the folks' place the ice went out on May 21st and as the water rushes by so do entire trees that have been uprooted from the banks upriver.  Fast flowing and very cold.  No swimming here yet.

There is a nesting pair of Bald Eagles that have returned to their summer time nest just across the river and I am fairly certain that this is evidence of their supper snack.  Feathers from a grouse are stuck in the rose bush and cover the ground.

Do you notice that the trees have not leafed out yet?  We have had a slow start to spring this year and there is still (was) plenty of snow in the shade.

We spent this first day of the four day weekend helping to repair the hot water maker in the guest cabin for Mom.  She closes the guest cabin down for the winter and there always seems to be something to fix come spring time.  It was great to hang out with Mom, visit and be treated to her wonderful cooking.

High Five Friday for Spring Walks

Our walk started off at the top of the hill at the university where you can spy signs of science in the works.

In the spring there is always other things to spy... like Moose droppings.

 There are fun natural mazes to wander through.

 

Encouraging signs of green in the woods spread hope for a beautiful summer.

Everyone on campus is taking advantage of the nicer weather.

Ireland Remembered

In honor of our Ireland adventure a year ago we cooked up a fabulous feast fit of a Chieftain.  Leg of lamb, roasted potatoes, carrots and  asparagus. Then once all these delicious items are on your plate... gravy!  

 

Oh Ireland ~ we miss you and the wonderful gastronomy!
