USE OF NCPA PROPAGATION CODE: A USER'S MANUAL

USE OF NCPA PROPAGATION CODE: A USER'S MANUAL

In acoustic and seismic studies, propagation simulations are a common research method. In infrasound studies, established simulations codes are often difficult to come by and are usually developed by individuals to investigate a particular situation; each individual must spend time and effort developing their own code. A standardized, though proprietary, set of propagation codes for infrasound studies has been developed by the National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) at the University of Mississippi and provided to the infrasound researchers here at UAF. We will discuss the components, requirements, common usage, and limitations of the NCPA Propagation Code package, effectively training researchers in operation of these “off the shelf" routines. In addition to general information, we will compare results from the NCPA Propagation Code package to a previously published case study: regional-scale propagation of infrasound through moderately strong stratospheric wind jets observed during Sayarim calibration experiments in 2009.
